Pakistani woman Mukhtar Mai attracted international attention in 2002, when she was sentenced to gang rape for a "crime of honour" allegedly committed by her brother. Instead of killing herself afterwards, as custom dictated, she took her rapists to court. She now runs the first school for girls in her village.
