When Charles Gascoyne and his children immigrate to New Zealand in 1853, illness forces his wife Isabella to stay in England. Arriving a year later, Isabella is ousted by the governess and rejected by her children and husband. The family becomes embroiled in the wars between Maori and settlers, and the arrival of a nephew brings more terror.
