In a remote valley in New Zealand in the late 1950s, the Duine family, displaced from their ancient lands by the Battle of Culloden, farm land given to them by Maori friends. Mara slowly finds connections between memory, history, ancestors, and dreams.

Award: the author's first novel, "A red silk sea", was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers' Prize and won the NZSA Hubert Church Best First Book Award for fiction at the 2006 Montana Book Awards.
