Lance Corporal Willie Apiata, a New Zealand Special Air Forces trooper, was trapped in a fierce battle with suspected Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan. One of his mates was bleeding to death. His act of courage earned him the first VC in New Zealand since World War II.
