23/11/2024 | This is a true story that reads like a well-written piece of fiction. Growing up with an alcoholic father and a mother who, in her own words, was "addicted to excitement", Jeannette and her siblings have to engineer their own survival. This involves moving from one school to the next as their parents run from debtors and childrens' authorities, finding their own food in rubbish bins, sharing homes with rats, and thinking up ingenious ways to stop their dad getting his hands on what little cash they have. Despite or perhaps because of all this the children are brave, clever and courageous. This is an inspiring read, a romping tale and a book that leaves you with a few thoughts to ponder after you've put it down. Reviewed by Mrs Storr | |
