Summary: Pandora, daughter of the River People, knows she must accept her life-long friend, Matthew, as her Chosen. She must do this for the survival of her village, one of the few, small enclaves of human habitation left ever since the Burning wiped out the last vestiges of urban population. But Pan also knows she does not feel the way she should for Matthew. She wants something else. Deep in her soul, she believes there is something more out there, beyond the boundaries, especially since she encountered the cougar hunter of the Mountain People whose very presence seems to make her forget who she is.When disaster comes to the River People, in the form of a disease no one wants to name, Pan sees it as her opportunity to escape the inevitable, to change her life and finally make her own choices. A story of defiant love and clumsy attempts at heroism, Pan's fight for her village's survival will bring her into contact with a whole new world, where the truth about the Burning is slowly revealed and her decisions reverberate, both for her and all those around her.
