Award: author won the Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize and was longlisted for the Booker Prize in 2001 for 'Dogside Story'; the New Zealand Fiction Award in 1987 for 'Potiki'; the Children's Picture Book of the Year in 1982 for 'The Kuia and the Spider'; and the Hubert Chruch Prose Award for the best first book in 1976 for 'Waiariki'.
