Summary: Everything changes for eleven-year-old Kimberly Chang when she moves with her mother from Hong Kong to New York. But their new life doesn't live up to their expectations - living in a vermin-ridden apartment in Brooklyn, they have in debt and neither of them speaks a word of English. While her mother works at a sweatshop, earning two cents a garment, intellectually gifted Kim faces the challenge of school.
